People resolving to lose weight in the new year have an extra incentive thanks to the American Council on Exercise.
The ACE has established the My Body, My Life Essay Contest urging people to discuss what is driving them to become more healthy. Winners will receive $250 and select submissions will be posted online.
ACE president and CEO Scott Goudeseune says there are benefits to losing weight beyond physical appearance.
"By achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, people are more likely to live a longer life and be more able to focus their energy on important things like family and friends," says Goudeseune. "We want to hear open and honest stories from anyone who has embarked on a fitness and weight loss journey."
People don't have to win the grade prize in a contest to realize financial savings by losing weight. Policyholders who are in good health often receive better life insurance quotes.
There are a number of medical conditions associated with obesity that drive premiums upwards. People with weight problems are more likely to be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, some forms of cancer and heart disease.
