Motorists are reminded to use extra caution during the holiday season

The holiday season can elicit excitement in children and adults alike. However, with all the travel associated with the time of year, it's important for motorists to use extra caution to help ensure their road trip is a successful one.

The American Trucking Association estimates more than 42 million motorists traveled the country's roads for Thanksgiving. While not as hectic of a travel holiday, many drivers will embark on trips for Christmas as well.

"With so many motorists on the road, it's important to use caution and patience while driving," says America's road team captain Greg Nauertz.

ATA says a motorist's trip will be smoother if they leave early for their destination and don't engage in distracted driving, which has been linked to a number of accidents.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 5,500 people died because of a distracted driver last year. Even if a motorist is cautious and mindful when driving, it doesn't mean everyone else behind the wheel is. Having life insurance can help alleviate some financial problems that may arise should the family breadwinner be involved in a fatal accident.
