The star forward for the Los Angeles Lakers, Lamar Odom, was recently featured in a public service announcement created in an effort to raise awareness of the benefits of life insurance. In honor of National Life Insurance Awareness Month, Odom shared how a financial plan helped him continue with his life after he lost his mother to colon cancer at the age of 12.
Before each game, Odom takes out a pair of white, purple and gold basketball shoes and writes the name Cathy on them, remembering his mother, Cathy Mercer. The basketball star remembers his mother each day, and is grateful he had the chance to succeed after her passing, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Because of his mother's financial savvy and responsible planning, Odom decided to use his story as a source of inspiration in the PSA.
Odom attributes his current success to the presence of his grandmother in his early years and his mother's life insurance policy[,] which provided financial stability for the family.
"Too many Americans think it won't happen to them and haven't done the kind of planning my mom did," Odom said in the commercial. "I hope that by sharing my story more people will take steps to protect themselves and their families with life insurance."
