Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina recently announced the appointment of businessman David Black as the state's new insurance commissioner.
Black's experience in the state's life insurance industry makes him highly qualified, Haley said in a statement.
"David Black comes from a business and insurance background - he's a former CEO at Liberty Life - and he is both highly qualified and highly recommended. Most of all, he understands that insurance can and should be an economic development agency, and that the agency must be as customer friendly and as pro-business as possible," she said.
Black also expressed a pro-business stance in his remarks, also thanking Governor Haley for the opportunity to serve. The appointment is subject to confirmation from the state Senate, however, according to the news site Business Insurance.
Other new insurance commissioners have taken office recently, most notably Dave Jones of California, who began his term in office by taking on several large insurers in that state over proposed rate hikes. A confrontation with Blue Shield of California could even prompt legal changes, according to the Los Angeles Times.
