Boston is considered one of the safest cities for families

It's important for young families to keep safety in mind for their children's sake. New parents in particular, are learning the ins and outs of raising children essentially through trial and error.

There are several things parents can do to ensure their families are properly cared for. In terms of insurance, purchasing life insurance is important to ensure children will be taken care of financially in the event of a parent passing away. Funds from a life insurance policy can be used to pay for college and other expenses associated with child rearing.

Furthermore, families will want to make sure they are raising their little ones in safe community. Underwriters Laboratories commissioned a study with Sperling's Best Places to find which major cities are safest for young families.

"There is a unique set of safety considerations that goes into developing safe homes, communities and environments for raising young children, and the purpose of the study was to bring awareness to the best practices in those areas," says UL public safety officer Gus Schaefer.

Boston, Columbus, Ohio, and Louisville, Kentucky are considered the safest three cities for young families, according to the survey. Cities were rated based on criteria including hospitals, home inspections, and pool safety laws.
