Eat plenty of fruits is important for a healthy lifestyle

Half the American population could be afflicted with pre-diabetes or diabetes by 2020, according to research by a major health insurance company.

It will take more than just efforts on the behalf of individuals to turn the epidemic around, according to a representative from the insurer.

"Making a major impact on the prediabetes and diabetes epidemic will require health plans to engage consumers in new ways, while working to scale nationally some of the most promising preventive care models," he said. "Done right, the human and economic benefits for the nation could be substantial."

The report looked at the relationship between obesity and diabetes. Carrying excess fat has been cited as one of the contributing risk factors behind the condition.

Shedding weight can improve one's overall health and result in better life insurance premiums. While it's best to consult a doctor before starting any weight loss program, simple steps can get one started down the right path.

Making sure one eats plenty of fruits and vegetables and manages to fit exercise into his or her lifestyle are off to a good start.
